The opening scenes transport us to a bleak, snowy forest where two desperate men, struggling to survive, find themselves making the terrible choice to consume human flesh. Flash forward, and we’re introduced to Nat and Ethan, a young couple, confined to a mental institution. Nat’s birthday serves as a rare moment of celebration within the institution’s stark walls. Ethan’s rebellious nature and determination to celebrate Nat’s birthday in freedom lead them to make a daring escape. Their bold dash out of the facility, complete with cupcakes, locked doors, and stolen keycards, is a thrilling ride that sets the tone for the rest of the movie. Their escape marks the beginning of something much bigger—and darker.
The friends, now reunited in a picturesque but isolated forest setting, begin their camping trip, but it’s clear from the start that something feels off. The group dynamic is strained: secrets linger beneath the surface, and everyone’s harboring their own doubts, mistrust, or fears. Pippa, the new addition Teddy’s sister, doesn’t fully trust Nat, and tensions grow as past conflicts bubble up. Nat’s and Teddy’s conversations by the lakeside are filled with nostalgia and sadness, particularly recalling the last camping trip they had with their mother before her decline.
But the forest seems to hold a presence of its own, foreshadowing the terrible events yet to come. When Ethan and Pippa visit a nearby house to hand over some forms, they find themselves stepping into the unexpected. Here they meet Blackwood, an unsettling character whose initially aggressive demeanor gives way to humor, putting them at ease for just a moment before the unease returns. His house is strange, and his reaction to their presence feels all too unpredictable.
The story continues to build its unnerving tension with the group’s campfire barbecue—seemingly innocent until Cam reveals the burgers may have come from Blackwood’s house. Pippa’s instincts warn her, but she succumbs to the pressure to blend in with the others. Their carefree moment is short-lived when Blackwood arrives at their campsite, tossing a bag across the table and crudely commanding their attention.
What follows is the movie’s most disturbing and tension-filled segment. Blackwood’s revelation hits the group like a sledgehammer: the burgers they ate were made of human flesh, turning them into unwilling participants in a ritual to feed the creature of the forest. The ritual’s sinister nature is revealed—those who partake in human flesh become the creature’s prey. They’ve been marked.
Panic grips the group as Blackwood forces them to tie themselves up, the cold realization dawning that they have become the sacrifice. His motivations are chillingly clear: by offering them up to the creature, Blackwood ensures his own safety—he becomes, in essence, the intermediary who keeps the beast at bay.
The scene descends into chaos when Blackwood ruthlessly kills Mike, recognizing that his refusal to eat the human-tainted food renders him useless to the creature. Cam’s desperate attempt to escape is thwarted when Blackwood violently stops him, a bag of blood marking him as the next victim.
As dawn approaches, the remaining friends are left in the grip of terror, tied and vulnerable, awaiting the creature that they still have not seen. The tension is excruciating—the audience knows the creature is out there, just beyond sight, waiting to claim what it’s owed.
The horror in this film isn’t just the creature in the woods—it’s the betrayal among friends, the test of morality in desperate situations, and the terrifying realization that survival sometimes means losing your humanity. The stark setting of the forest, the mysterious creature, and the moral descent of the characters all combine to create a harrowing narrative that leaves viewers questioning: What would you do to survive?
