Former Michigan assistant Connor Stalions has landed a head coaching job despite the sign-stealing allegations that cost him his position with the Wolverines.

Stalions, also the subject of a new Netflix documentary in which he tells his side of the story, is holding on at Detroit Mumford High School following the head coach suffering a mild stroke.

William McMichael was hospitalized on August 30, one day after Detroit Mumford started their season with a loss to Thurston, and remained for three days. Stalions will coach the team against Hamady High School in Livonia, Michigan, this Friday.

“Connor is leading the team now,” McMichael told CBS Sports via text message.

The coach told the outlet he had no idea when he would return to work.

Stalions had been volunteering as a defensive coordinator for the Mustangs since Memorial Day. The school has only won four times in 26 outings since the start of the 2022 season, but he will hope to get his first W as a head coach this weekend.

Stalions is the focal point of the NCAA’s sign-stealing investigation and stands accused of illegally scouting Michigan’s opponents. The program was officially put on notice late last month.

The former Wolverines staffer resigned last November, with the team going on to win the national championship after the turn of the year.

CBS said they reached out to Mumford principal Damon Pitt and did not hear back.

Connor Stalions took charge of training there on Thursday, with only 30 players dressed.

“It’s a matter of keeping them bought in,” he told the publication.

The former Michigan staffer still dreams of becoming Michigan’s head coach one day. He told CBS Sports he hopes he can become a college head coach in the future.
